La marche du baoyé

Nothing much remained from the life of Tiago, his brother Big Ouji, his Mum and Dad, of the whole Manké farming family. A watering can, a sewing machine and a hair brush -just a few objects discarded on a rickety cart next to the last baoye tree, the tree that gives eleven juicy fruits and whom they called Mister B.
The Uprooters had swallowed it all, down to the last scrap of their farm. Tiago and his family had to take to the road then, it was a case of do or die. By dawn a kouré had disappeared. Eleven kourés minus one - that wouldn’t take them far on their way. All the more as, high in the desert sky, rats in feathers were already casting a beady eye on the blue fruits.
Experienced author Sigrid Baffert has worked hand in hand with the painting and sculpting Sabrier sisters to offer a powerful and delicate depiction of this family’s exile.

Il ne reste pas grand-chose de la vie de Tiago et de son frère Grand Ouji, de P’pa et M’ma, les fermiers Manké. Un arrosoir, une machine à coudre et un peigne, des objets jetés en vrac sur une carriole de fortune, aux côtés du dernier baoyé, un arbre aux onze fruits juteux, appelé Monsieur B. Les Déracineurs ont tout avalé, jusqu’à la moindre parcelle de leur ferme. Alors, Tiago et sa famille ont dû prendre la route. C’était ça ou crever.
Mais, sur les chemins de sable rouge, très vite, il faut choisir la bonne direction, lutter contre une faim digne d’un barracuda, marcher et encore marcher. Parfois, la nuit, faire fuir les fantômes aussi. C’est ça ou crever. Heureusement, les onze kourés appétissantes et sucrées se balancent aux branches de Monsieur B, pour plus tard.
Ce matin, une kouré a disparu. Onze kourés moins une. Ça fait peu pour tenir sur la route. Surtout que, dans le ciel du désert, des rats plumés lorgnent déjà sur les fruits bleus.
